I haven't got much Linux experience but recently I found SLAX which can be run off a CD. So without installing anything on the HDD, my PC could be up and running. It was especially useful when my XP crashed and SLAX enabled me to recover my files that were stuck on the HDD out to a USB drive.

Really good stuff !!
